چکیده

To the Editor: Many patients in Africa present with HIV for the first time when they develop an opportunistic infection such as toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE). Optimal management of opportunistic infections such as TE is important in improving health and allowing patients to benefit from the expanding roll-out of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).1-3 Possible treatment regimens for TE include pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine (P+S), pyrimethamine plus clindamycin (P+C), co-trimoxazole, and atovaquone.

Toxoplasmic encephalitis relapse rates with pyrimethamine-based therapy: systematic review and meta-analysis

Toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) is caused by Toxoplasma gondii infection and can be a life-threatening disease in immunocompromised patients. This study evaluated the rate of relapse associated with pyrimethamine-based maintenance therapy (i.e. secondary prophylaxis) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or AIDs treated prior to and after the common use (i.e. 1996) of highly active ...

Urine methyl malonic acid levels in HIV-infected adults with peripheral neuropathy

Background: Cobalamin deficiency and peripheral neuropathy (PN) are commonly seen in HIV-infected adults. The level of urine methylmalonic acid (UMMA), a reliable indicator of tissue cobalamin status, was determined in HIV infected subjects with and without PN to establish this association. Methods: One hundred and ninety-eight (198) consenting HIV infected subjects with and without PN were rec...

Role of specific immunoglobulin E in diagnosis of acute toxoplasma infection and toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasma immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies were evaluated in an immunosorbent agglutination assay (ISAGA) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine their usefulness in the diagnosis of acute infection with Toxoplasma gondii. IgE antibodies were not detected in serum specimens from otherwise seronegative individuals, individuals with chronic toxoplasma infection, or infants...
